Periodontal Treatment (Gum Disease):
Periodontal disease is found in the gums and can eventually cause pain and teeth to fall out. Gums are very important to a the health of a mouth, without them, teeth have nothing to anchor themselves in.
Periodontal disease has three stages. It is usually begins painlessly as gingivitis, which can usually be cured by regular brushing and flossing. The gingivitis is caused by the bacteria in the plaque, the bacteria put out toxins that begin to damage the gums. In the second stage periodontitis, the bones, gums and tissues that support the teeth can be severely damaged because the plaque from the first stage has turned into tartar. The tartar attracts more bacteria that emit even more toxins. In this stage the gums can also begin to recede. In the final stage, the gums have receded and begun to destroy the bone. In this stage, teeth, even healthy ones can become loose and may need to be removed.
Signs that you may have periodontal disease:
- swollen, tender or red gums
